After a couple of months of planning and prep work, I finally have some material to show for the fabled Anime Animay 2: some teasers for the “INKING”.
I put that in quotes because these drawings were not done in literal ink, but with a tool on the computer that makes pixels look kind of like they came from a pen. Some of the lines have weird colors which helps to differentiate the layers, which is important for readability at this stage.
There are a LOT of effects in the finished version, but I try to inject as much energy as possible and make the action speak yet, even if it’s only black lines.
I went through a pretty painstaking process for that cross-section, but I love how it came out. Importantly, the structure is coherent and ALSO looks like it’s being sucked into a tornado, which is how I like to do things. How painstaking? I had the foresight to record it so instead of just me complaining, you can get an idea:
A few more teases for the hitherto black and white dystopian battle-racing action:

I think it’s a good sign that I can’t look through these panels without making angry car sounds.
The inking phase is finished, so as I go along I’ll be showing colored pages too. Stay tuned, more of that to come!
There’s a mysticism to making a living as an artist. Probably a freelance of any kind. Have faith, do good work, and interested parties will notice and pay attention. It’s like the free will question though, the view of the Calvinists: you can’t just do nothing and let destiny take its course, you have to do a lot of work and find the culture veins to inject your brand into. So I guess there is no free will, but you better not just sit on your ass either. Calvinism is a mess.
And, of course, just doing this guarantees nothing. That’s the faith aspect, something that I’ve always been uncomfortable with. I like certainty. But there’s no long term certainty, the best we get is
Do work. Be seen. Expand at a safe and sane pace, unless you’re some kind of risk taking lunatic. For me, every time I’ve extended too fast, I’ve swerved over to the edge and looked down into the gorge and thought ”dang you know I don’t want to end up down there”.
Maintain a youthful spirit, do damage. Have fun or what’s the point?
That is all. More next week, I promise.
What did you think of the new headers? I had fun making them. There are more, there is no uniformity to this project.
"Do work. Be seen. Expand at a safe and sane pace [...]" my brain loves to do loops to convince me it's not that simple, but this resonates so deeply. THANK YOU. Also -- came here sent by @sethwerkheiser who's also so wise, kind, helpful, and inspiring. Thank you both.
‘Maintain a youthful spirit, do damage. Have fun or what’s the point?’ This goes on paper for me, Rob. Thank you.
And that video… I want those moments for every kid on the planet. Can you imagine???
