Drawing in a Jazz Ocean
I just came up with that term, I like it. I think it's an accurate descriptor.
Some of you will be up on the fact that I had a kid recently, so that leaves me with considerably reduced time to work on this newsletter. However, I found it so important to do SOME kind of artwork that’s not work related. So I did some stuff and made a process video for you (didn’t have time to record a voiceover), want to start posting those again!
I’ve been listening to Kamasi Washington a lot lately, something about those deep jazz oceans have just been pulling me in. So I felt like doing a drawing of the guy, why the hell not? Reference was taken from some press photo from around his first album’s release. He’s got this sort of cosmic priest aesthetic that I’m a fan of.
Preliminary sketches, variations on composition preceded the starting of the actual thing.
Micron Fine-liners 05 and 08. It’s not much, but doing a finished drawing unpaid these days is a big accomplishment for me, so I’ll take it and send it!
I wish I had time to voiceover and the editing is a little slapdash, but it’s another box ticked and that’s good enough for me this week!
If you’re not knowing and you’re looking to know, I recommend starting with the (6 track, 31 minute long) EP Harmony of Difference, I think it’s probably his most approachable body of work, but if you’ve got three hours to fill with cosmic jazz, I recommend his first full album, The Epic. It’s a transcendental trip from start to finish.
That will be all.
Cool vid. And I love the piece in its final presentation. Very strong, very masculine, very mystical.
